Sets to Move the X5
Let's look at three sets that compliment a Blur Screen DDM system and have the objective of moving the X5 away from the rim.
There are clear pros and cons in choosing to use Four Out Spacing on the offensive end of the floor. One of the key tradeoffs is that you gain gap spacing on the perimeter in exchange for leaving rim protection in the paint. By keeping one player inside the three-point line we are also keeping a defensive player there. We try to combat that presence in the paint by keeping our big man in the drop zone ready to play off his help. However, on occasion, you will run into X5 defenders that are so disruptive that they need to be removed from the paint.
In this post, we are going to go over three set plays that pair well with four-out spacing. By design, each of these actions attempts to move the X5 out of the paint and then tries to exploit a now unguarded rim. In my opinion, these are all actions that probably work best as ATOs or dead-ball scenarios. We're probably not calling these actions mid-possession, but simply reserving them for moments when we see the defense presenting us with this problem
Now let's break these down:
- Rip Action
- Delay Action
- Open Flex
